Windows 7 for Netbooks

Microsoft have come announced that their upcoming Windows 7 OS will primarily center around Home Premium and Professional editions with 6 other supersets available. With the netbook phenomenon taking the mobile PC world by storm and the increased uptake of Linux-based netbooks, rumour had been circulating that Microsoft may release a NetBook specific version which was optimised specifically for these lighter spec machines.

In my opinion, this is more a PR move as their current OS (Vista) was widely regarded as a bit of a system hog and required at least 2GB or RAM to run smoothly. By announcing a NetBook specific flavour of Windows 7, Microsoft would have fueled the perception that their latter Operating Systems were resource heavy and demanding on even high-end PCs. Redmond are keen to distance themselves from the previous “Vista Capable” confusion.
